What's the difference between flake and metallic epoxy?

For a flake floor, we paint a base coat of epoxy then broadcast 100 pounds of vinyl chips that adhere to the epoxy. After a polyaspartic top coat, there is a thick layer of protection and a naturally slip-resistent texture.

A metallic floor requires additional preparation of a vapor barrier so be sure to generate a smooth surface to highlight the fluid marble effect. We mix metallic pigment powders into the resin then create the dramatic effect by adding veins of different colors into the baground color.

Can't I do this myself?

There are certainly DIY kits out there that promise to make an epoxy floor available to the do-it-yourself homeowner. However, there is no comparison. The DIY kit will come with some citric acid cleaner and the requirement that you wash and scrub the concrete by hand, then let it dry thoroughly, in order for the epoxy to stick. You'll need two kits for the averge two car garage, and often the colors don't quite match between batches. Lastly, you'll sprinkle a few flakes on top to give texture and interest.

Does epoxy flooring require a moisture barrier?

Water is the enemy while an epoxy floor adheres, hardens and cures to concrete. Stone and Forge will always utilize a state-of-the-art moisture meter to determine your concrete's moisture level. Particularly in Houston's hot humid climate and moist soil conditions, certain applications may require a moisture vapor barrier to keep moisture from coming up through your concrete to affect the epoxy. If we find high moisture in your concrete, an additional, clear moisture vapor barrier will be applied first to the bare concrete, to seal it. Once that cures, we can continue with the base coat, flake or quartz or marble, and top coat.

What's the difference between epoxy and polyaspartic?

We use a hybrid system of an epoxy base coat and a polyaspartic top coat.

Epoxy cures slower and therefore penetrates deeper into freshly ground concrete, providing the opportunity to sink deeply into the microscopic pores of the concrete, creating a strong bond. This also gives superior moisture vapor mitigation, keeping water from rising through the concrete.

Polyaspartic is many times more durable, scratch resistent and wear resistent than standard epoxy, and is immune to hot tire pickup. It also has superior UV protection and will not yellow in sunlight.
