Does epoxy flooring require moisture barrier?
Water is the enemy while an epoxy floor adheres, hardens and cures to concrete. Stone and Forge will always utilize a state of the art moisture meter to determine your concrete's moisture level. Particularly in Houston's hot humid climate and moist soil conditions, certain applications may require a moisture vapor barrier to keep moisture from coming up through your concrete to affect the epoxy. If we find high moisture in your concrete, an additional, clear moisture vapor barrier will be applied first to the bare concrete, to seal it. Once that cures, we can continue with the base coat, flake or quartz or marble, and top coat.
Can't I do this myself?
There are certainly DIY kits out there that promise to make an epoxy floor available to the do-it-yourself homeowner. However, there is no comparison. The DIY kit will come with some citric acid cleaner and the requirement that you wash and scrub the concrete by hand, then let it dry thoroughly, in order for the epoxy to stick. You'll need two kits for the averge two car garage, and often the colors don't quite match between batches. Lastly, you'll sprinkle a few flakes on top to give texture and interest.
